The program for ITINERANT INTERLUDE #11 took inspiration from the theme of Aanant & Zoo’s group show basal to present works of composers that explore the most basic elements of music and language, gesture and symbol. Like the works featured in basal, the musical performances presented in ii #11 also outline a broad arc of time. John Cage’s “Aria”, composed for Cathy Berberian in 1958, describes pitch and time graphically, employing vowels, consonants and words from 5 different languages; the interpreter is free to choose 10 different styles of singing in addition to “any noises” and establish his or her own correspondence between these and the colors and symbols of the score. The full title of Dieter Schnebel’s “Ansätze” (coincidentally dedicated to artist Gerhard Rühm at the time of its composition in 1985) reads “Basics for Vowels and Consonants along with Head Movements” and the “score” is a topographic map of very precise actions to be followed. In “Composizione per voce” (1997), Emanuele Casale was inspired by the traditional song of the carrettiere of his native Catania, Sicily. The work is a funeral lament with echoes of the songs of the fishermen. It received its world premiere at the fish market in Catania, which points to another intersection with a work in the show…

The exhibition basal presented works by Donald Bernshouse, Stuart Brisley, Julien Carreyn, Jochen Dehn, Merlin James, Philip Loersch, Vlado Martek, Michael Müller, Kasper Pincis, Gerhard Rühm, Max Schaffer.
